A development creating affordable new homes for local people, is underway in a Northumberland town.
The Castles & Coasts Housing Association (CCHA) scheme was officially launched by Andrea Taylor, Homes England’s Senior Manager, and Jason Wylie, Managing Director of Imperator Developments, who joined CCHA’s Property Services Director, Rob Brittain, to celebrate the construction of the affordable rented properties in Newsham, Blyth.
Work has started on the development, which received the go ahead from Northumberland County Council in February, which will bring to life an area of abandoned land in a community in need of homes for local families and older people.
Imperator Developments will deliver construction of the housing scheme, on behalf of CCHA, which is made up of 27 homes, with a mix of two bedroom bungalows and two and three bedroom houses, creating additional homes in an area which is seeing ongoing regeneration and economic investment.
Rob Brittain, CCHA’s Property Services Director, said: “We’re delighted to be able to bring this exciting, high quality new development to Blyth. 100% of the new homes on the scheme will be available for affordable rent to local people and those who have a connection to the area, with an eligible housing need.
“Although today has marked the official launch of works on site, excellent progress has already been made and I’d like to thank Homes England and Imperator Developments for working with us on this scheme, which ensures that local people are given the opportunity to remain in a community in which they have grown up in.”
“Not only does this vital scheme deliver much needed, high quality affordable homes, we will sustain 22 jobs in the area, during the construction period. This sort of additional benefit is something which CCHA always strives for in our development projects.”
CCHA’s Development Manager, Jo Gooding, added: “Northumberland County Council has recognised how vital this project is and how it complements the area’s ongoing regeneration. We are really excited about the first homes being completed and occupied by local people. This whole project has been designed to not only provide excellent homes, but to also help create and develop a strong sense of pride and community.”
Imperator Developments and CCHA started work on site in February 2021, with the main contractor J&B Nelson Construction, and they plan to have the first homes available by Spring 2022. Applications for the homes will be via Northumberland Homefinder and the properties will be advertised on Homefinder, approximately six weeks before their completion date.
Andrea Taylor, Senior Manager at Homes England, said: “Despite the current challenges affecting the country, accelerating housebuilding remains our number one priority. We are committed to supporting CCHA in its ambition to build new homes, and our investment through affordable housing grant allows us to do that. We’re delighted that this funding enables CCHA to deliver much needed new homes in Blyth.”
Managing Director of Imperator Developments, Jason Wylie, added: “Imperator Developments is pleased to be working with CCHA, to bring 27 much needed affordable homes to Blyth. Our business ethos is to provide high quality affordable housing, and this development will do this.”
“As well as providing high quality affordable housing, we are working with a local contractor, J&B Nelson Construction, to build the properties. All materials are being purchased through a local supply chain and, by doing this, we are protecting local jobs and investing in local businesses.”
