A special tree planting ceremony took place at Greta Gardens, Castles & Coasts Housing Association’s (CCHA’s) extra care scheme in Keswick, on Sunday 1st October as part of a Freemason’s initiative to commemorate the Coronation of King Charles III.
Each Freemason lodge in the UK planted a tree to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and this is being repeated in 2023 for King Charles III. The Derwentwater Lodge approached CCHA to ask if a Keswick ‘Coronation tree’ could be planted in the grounds at Greta Gardens.
The tree of choice for Greta Gardens was a cherry blossom, and Derwentwater Lodge was the first to undertake the tree planting for the new initiative.
William Henry Morley BEM, Deputy Provincial Grand Master in the Province of Cumberland and Westmorland, joined CCHA’s Independent Living Manager, Allison Allison, Independent Living Scheme Manager, Louise Blackburn-Graham, Greta Garden residents and over 20 members of Derwentwater Lodge for the ceremony, which was followed by a reception in the scheme’s bistro.
Louise said: “We’re hugely grateful to Derwentwater Lodge for donating this beautiful cherry blossom and commemorative plaque. It’s a really lovely way to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III and will be a lasting reminder of the occasion for residents and colleagues for years to come. We can’t wait to see it grow and bloom.”
Allison added: “I was delighted to join colleagues and residents yesterday for this event. It was really lovely to see so many people there and everyone worked so hard to make is a success. We were showered with positive feedback and compliments and I was proud of the team and what they have achieved.”
Greta Gardens is one of many independent living schemes managed by Castles & Coasts. It features self-contained apartments that offer the over 55s the chance to maintain their independence with the option of joining in the many social activities in the scheme’s communal areas. As an ‘extra care’ scheme, there is also a care team available on site 24 hours a day.
