CCHA estate walkabouts support ASB Awareness Week

Castles & Coasts Housing Association (CCHA) is joining the national ASB Awareness Week 2024 campaign running from 18 to 24 November, to tackle anti-social behaviour (ASB) and help keep people in our communities safe.

To mark the return of ASB Awareness Week this year, CCHA has organised a week of estate walkabouts in neighbourhoods across nine towns and villages in Cumbria and the north east.

The campaign aims to encourage communities to take a stand against ASB and highlight the actions that can be taken by those experiencing it.

CCHA handled 772 cases of ASB in the 2023-24 financial year and is committed to supporting those residents who are affected by ASB.

Organised by RESOLVE, the UK’s leading ASB and community safety organisation, the week features a series of events all across the UK involving housing associations, local councils, police forces, charities, community groups and sports clubs.

Anna Bates, Head of Housing at CCHA, said: “At CCHA we believe that everybody has a right to enjoy their home and live safely and peacefully. ASB can really blight neighbourhoods, so we’re committed to working with our partners, residents and our local communities to tackle it.”

Colleagues will be on hand to chat to residents, hand out leaflets on how to report ASB, and will be joined at points in the week by representatives from other agencies including the police, local authorities and restorative justice charity, Remedi.

Anna continued: “Awareness weeks like this are a great way to remind residents to report ASB so that we can support them, investigate each case thoroughly, and take any action needed. Along with our partners, we’re really looking forward to chatting with residents during the week and beyond, so they know we’re here to help if they have any ASB issues.”

Richard Quinn, Cumberland Council’s Safer Communities Manager, and manager of the Community Safety Partnership, said:

“I’m delighted to see the partnership working together to make this an impactful Antisocial Behaviour Awareness Week.

“Antisocial behaviour can adversely affect communities in so many ways - and a robust, co-ordinated approach to tacking it is essential. It’s great to be joining our social housing partners in getting into our communities, hearing people’s concerns and making a difference.

“Antisocial behaviour is one of four priorities in the Community Safety Partnership’s three-year plan. Together we have planned to do all we can to reduce it. Our Local Focus Hubs are set up to tackle the issue collectively, improving cohesion and reduce instances of ASB.”

Chief Inspector Richard Smillie, Cumberland BCU Neighbourhood Policing Lead said: “This week the local neighbourhood policing teams and partners will be highlighting the work we do, every day, to tackle anti-social behaviour.

“We take a partnership approach, responding to incidents, understanding the issues and working together to tackle the issue, as well as prevent further from occurring.

“However, key to us being able to provide an effective policing response is the information and support provided by local people. The public reporting and making them aware of the issues which you are witnessing or experiencing results in a greater intelligence picture, and importantly leads to action being taken to investigate and deter incidents.”
