National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is a yearly chance for schools, employers, and the skills sector to cheer on the successes of apprentices. The theme for NAW 2024, taking place from February 5-11, is 'Skills for Life,' focusing on different aspects each day, from promoting apprenticeships for everyone to highlighting individual stories.

Castles and Coasts Housing Association (CCHA) is excited to showcase the achievements of individuals like Matthew Busby, an 18-year-old apprentice electrician. Matthew works in Castles and Coasts Services (CCS), an in-house team that delivers services for CCHA properties. This includes repairs, electrical work, compliance checks, grounds maintenance, and cleaning. With over 80 team members, CCS offers apprentices a diverse range of skills and experience.

Matthew's journey shows personal growth and the opportunities apprenticeships at CCHA can provide. His four-year apprenticeship involves a mix of classroom learning and hands-on work, offering a thorough understanding of the electrical trade. Matthew began his career with a full-time Electrical Installations course at Lakes College, and after his first year, he secured a job at CCHA in September 2023 as an apprentice electrician. Currently studying Level 3 Electrical Installations, he spends one day a week at college and the rest honing his practical skills on the job.

Inspired by a family friend's success with the housing provider, Matthew saw the potential for an exciting and rewarding career.

Matthew's daily routine starts at 8 am, picked up in a works van, tackling tasks from rewires to repairs, with a flexible lunch break and a typical end time of 4:30 pm. He’s currently working on a full re-wire in an empty property, alongside Steven a more experienced colleague. Matthew said “I’m learning loads and am really proud to be part a team making sure that the home is safe for the next resident. Every day is a chance to learn something new and I’m proud of the work we do for CCHA."

One memorable experience for Matthew was collaborating with his colleague Billy in Maryport. He said: “We were allocated a full week to install an armoured cable but got the job done in just two days,” which highlights what can be achieved with the teamwork fostered in CCHA's apprenticeship program.

Mentorship from experienced colleagues plays a vital role in Matthew's growth. Regular support and feedback create a connected and engaging environment. For Matthew "Staying in the loop is crucial. Emails, online news, and updates from Brett Carson, CCS Business Manager – these keep me informed about what's happening at CCHA. It's not just a job; it's about working together for our residents."

Matthew sees a bright future with CCHA: "Looking ahead, I see big things. A fully qualified electrician, my own van, and even training future apprentices. It's like building a career and then passing on the knowledge.”

His advice to those considering an apprenticeship at CCHA is simple: "Just go for it! I’d encourage anyone thinking about an apprenticeship not to miss this incredible opportunity ".

As National Apprenticeships Week unfolds, Matthew's story serves as an inspiration for those contemplating a similar path within CCHA.
