A new chapter for the Lake District village of Gosforth has begun with the official completion of Summerscales, a new 20 home development by Castles & Coasts Housing Association.

Summerscales marks the first major housing construction in the area for more than 20 years and provides a mix of affordable rent, shared ownership, rent to buy and outright sale homes for local people who live and work in the community.

With support from the Homes England Affordable Homes Programme, Summerscales represents a significant step forward in meeting local housing need and ensuring that families can remain rooted in the area.

The majority of new homes are already occupied, and the development is quickly becoming part of the thriving community. Local families have begun to settle in, turning new houses into homes and bringing fresh energy to the village.

Dawn Clark, Chief Executive of Castles and Coasts Housing Association, said:
“Summerscales is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when organisations work together with a shared goal. Through our partnership with Thomas Armstrong Construction and the valued support of Homes England, Cumberland Council and the Lake District National Park Authority we’ve delivered high quality homes that meet genuine local need. It’s wonderful to see families already moving in and making this place their home.”

David Atkinson, Deputy Chief Executive and Managing Director of Thomas Armstrong Construction, added:
“Delivering a project like Summerscales in a rural location comes with its challenges, but through strong partnership working and a shared commitment to the community, we’ve created something truly special. Seeing the development complete, and now lived in, is a proud moment for everyone involved.”

The scheme has also been welcomed by Cumberland Council, whose support was instrumental in helping the development come to fruition.

Amanda Starr, Head of Housing and Inclusion at Cumberland Council, said:
“Summerscales demonstrates the positive impact that partnership and investment can have on local communities. It’s fantastic to see these new homes being occupied by local families, helping to sustain the village for future generations.”

Councillor Emma Williamson, Deputy Leader and Children's Services, Family Wellbeing and Housing Portfolio Holder at Cumberland Council, said:
"This is a great example of local partnership in action, building homes, hope, and a stronger future for Gosforth. Summerscales is more than new homes, it’s new beginnings for local families and a stronger future for the Gosforth community."

All affordable rent and rent to buy homes were quickly snapped up, highlighting the strong demand for quality, affordable housing in the area.  A limited number of homes are still available to reserve, including 2 shared ownership properties and 2 for outright sale, currently being marketed by Grisdales estate agent – visit their website for more details: www.grisdales.co.uk

Summerscales will continue to provide much needed housing for local people, helping to support the long-term sustainability and vibrancy of the village.
