Earlier this month, CCHA colleagues spent a day volunteering at Oak Tree Animal Charity near Carlisle.
The charity provides a safe place for cats, dogs and equines in their time of need. They look to rehome dogs, cats, and equines and work to support good, long-term healthy relationships between animals and their owners out in the community.
Residents who through ill health or other reasons find they are struggling to care for their pets can contact Oak Trees for support and advice. The charities dedication and compassion towards animals and humans has made a significant impact on a number of our residents, and we felt it was time to give something back.
Our Charity and Volunteering Committee (CVC) organised a volunteering day at Oak Trees and the response was overwhelming. A group of colleagues from various parts of the business including CCS, Lettings & Neighbourhoods, Finance, Housing, Corporate Support and Customer Services, came together to roll up their sleeves and engage in a variety of tasks, including:
- Sorting, building & packing: Our team assembled gazebos and marquees for the sanctuary’s fundraising events. Their meticulous work meant these structures would provide shelter during outdoor activities.
- Barn clearing: The barn was transformed from cluttered chaos to an organised space. Our volunteers sorted and tidied up, creating a more functional environment for the animals.
- Storage organisation: Staff members put up new shelving in the storage building, optimising space and accessibility. Their efforts will streamline future operations.
- Stable door repairs: Horses can be quite enthusiastic, and their kicks took a toll on stable doors. Our team replaced locks, hinges, and realigned doors, ensuring safety and durability.
Beyond the physical tasks, colleagues had the opportunity to learn about the sanctuary’s mission. They took a guided tour, discovering first-hand the incredible work done by the dedicated staff and volunteers. From rescuing injured wildlife to providing a loving home for abandoned pets, the sanctuary’s impact is immeasurable.
Felicity Davidson, Joint Chair of the CVC said:
“We’re proud that our business supports staff volunteering. Each employee is entitled to one paid volunteering day per year. It’s a chance to give back, connect with the community, and make a difference beyond our office walls. So far this year, we have helped transform a classroom space at Ashfield Junior School, carried out repairs and painting at Maryport Inshore Rescue Station and raised over £8,000 for the Great North Air Ambulance!”
