Work has now started to deliver 55 new affordable homes at Todd Hill between Castleside and Consett.
Castles and Coasts Housing Association (CCHA) are working with Adderstone Living to deliver a mix of 2 and 3-bedroom houses and 2-bedroom bungalows across the 3.78-hectare site. Once completed, the scheme will deliver 55 affordable homes, including 38 for affordable rent, 11 for rent-to-buy, and 6 for shared ownership.
Rob Brittain, CCHA’s Executive Director of Homes and Investment said: “We’re delighted to bring this exciting, high-quality new development to Todd Hill. I’d like to thank Homes England and Adderstone Living for their valued partnership in delivering this scheme, which will help address the strong demand for affordable housing in the local area.”
Part-funded by Homes England, the development will deliver energy-efficient homes built to high environmental standards, reducing carbon emissions and helping residents save on energy bills.
Jo Ellis, Development Manager at CCHA, said: “As well as building high-quality, energy efficient homes, we’re looking forward to building great relationships with the local community. The site offers wonderful views of the Hownsgill Aqueduct and surrounding countryside and will be a lovely place to live.”
Stephen McCoy, Chief Executive Officer at Adderstone Living said: "The strength of this scheme is its variety. By providing a mix of tenures and house types more people in County Durham can find a home that really suits them. We've always taken the view that homes should be built to last and to be lived in well, delivering this with Castles & Coasts who have equally high standards makes it a project worth doing properly."
With a total scheme cost of £12.3million, this development represents a significant investment in the local community. The first homes are expected late Spring 2027 with final completion on site expected by 2028.
